Each time an activity is completed, circle the star on the recording slip. Each activity completed will earn 1 star. There are additional activities for students who want an extra challenge! The more activities completed, the more stars earned.
Each day, the slips and work should be returned to school. We will total all of the star earned by the class. The class will earn a reward based on the following outline.
Class Rewards
60 - 80 Stars: 5 minutes of free choice on Friday! 81 - 160 Stars: 8 minutes of free choice on Friday! 161 - all Stars: 10 minutes of free choice on Friday! Improve the score from the week before? Everyone gets a star on their improver wall!!!
Here are the guidelines and expectations for earning stars:
Read for 20 minutes
This applies to all types of reading. Comics, newspapers, novels, etc. Raz-Kids and Read Theory fall under this heading as well. Don't worry so much about the time as focus on enjoying what you are reading. The 20 minutes is a general time frame. Students should write one sentence, on the back of the slip, about the main idea each night they read.
Fresh Read - Main Idea Statement
This is the first reading of the Fresh Reads activity. A main idea statement should be written beneath the passage.
Fresh Read - Close Read Symbols
This is the second reading of the Fresh Reads activity. Close reading symbols should be added to the passage.
Fresh Read - Answer Questions
The student should answer the questions on the back of the passage. The page should be returned on Thursday.
Fact Practice - 10 minutes
This is to practice any of the basic math facts in Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division. It can be in the form of flashcards, oral quizzing, or an app. The goal is for accuracy first and then focus on speed. It can even be a practice of creating an entire multiplication grid.
If you feel that your child is beyond practicing basic facts, please let me know and I can provide Super Speed Math practice.
Writing Journal (rough draft)
This is the rough draft of any prompt of your choice. It should be at least three paragraphs (this includes an opening SQD and closing FFZ) Make sure to use complete sentences and use your capitals and periods. This can be written in your writing journal.
Writing Journal (final draft) BONUS STAR
This is an improvement of your rough draft. You are looking to add similes (for example, the sky is as blue as a blueberry or she ran fast like a cheetah), idioms (for example, she was tickled pink or bringing home the bacon), alliteration (for example, big blue bananas bounced by and Sylvester's silly sand castle), add paragraphs, and use more descriptive verbs. Click on each word for examples. This can be written in your writing journal.
Current Event Activity BONUS STAR
Choose a current event (within the last two weeks) that interests you. Write a brief summary of the event. Make sure to include the who, what, where, when. Also, include one sentence explaining why you chose the article, and one sentence sharing any thought, feeling, or reaction you have about the event. Use the below form to submit the assignment.
